Chapter Seven

Leaving had taken longer than he’d hoped; Vanessa had a difficult time saying goodbye. Beatrice hadn’t helped much either. Once she started with the waterworks, Vanessa had followed suit. Their hugs on the porch had ended up back inside the house on the couch. That had given Gabe time to update Rafe with the latest development.

Now he was on the road with Vanessa who was fast asleep. If he thought she’d sleep through his conversation, he’d call Rafe again. But she wasn’t sleeping deeply. It had been an emotional day for her. He wasn’t sure how the hell he’d gotten her to agree to come with him, but he was thankful she had. If she hadn’t, it would’ve made it more challenging to secure Beatrice’s property. Of course, utilizing David’s cabin in the mountains in New Hampshire wasn’t the best scenario either. If Gabe had his way, they’d go to a building with three foot thick walls and no windows. The only person getting inside would be him. But that wasn’t going to happen, at least not quickly. So now they were scrambling to cover the surrounding woods. Since there weren’t any neighbors or hikers allowed for miles, they were going with one rule. If it was human and moved, shoot it. Simple.

Luckily David and one of his veteran buddies, Bill, were already at the cabin. What they were doing there, no one said. Right now Gabe didn’t care. But with them there, it made the change of plans much easier to implement. Rafe said a chopper had dropped off the required motion detectors and their guys were already in the process of setting them all up. David’s cabin wasn’t ideal, but they were going to make it work. Hell, we’ve worked with less; that doesn’t mean I like doing it with Vanessa’s life on the line.

He’d promised he would protect her. Every word he’d spoken came from his heart. The problem with strategic planning is the heart can’t be calculated into the situation accurately. Were the odds really in their favor? Gabe believed so. His brothers and their teams weren’t people to be fucked with. The unknown was Parker, who was on his own “team.” Frank had told them Parker dealt with thugs. They weren’t formally trained, but they were cold-blooded killers, whose only driving force was collecting their bounty at the end of the job. They weren’t concerned with honor or justice. Money was their morality. But the Turchettas had a policy: no negotiations with terrorists, thugs, or mobsters. If you’re the asshole standing between the Turchettas and saving someone’s life, they would take you out of the picture. Permanently.

Gabe was concerned about what was coming their way. He’d be a fool not to be. But right now there was another concern, on a much smaller scale. When he asked Vanessa to come with him, he hadn’t known what their accommodations might be; he’d left organizing that piece to Rafe. Gabe knew he should prepare her for the lack of certain amenities and comforts David’s cabin held.
